Vintage JANOWM “World’s Best DeLuxe” Sewing Machine – Wooden Case & Foot Control

This is certainly one of the more unusual vintage sewing machines in the collection—and the wonderful JANOWM name and elaborate decoration immediately make it stand out.  Vintage black cast-iron sewing machine with gold floral decals, labeled "JANOWM"

The machine is a substantial black cast-iron, straight-stitch sewing machine, finished with wonderfully ornate cream-and-gold decals. Across the arm is the large JANOWM name surrounded by crests, lions, shields and decorative scrollwork, while the pillar carries a metal badge reading “WORLD’S BEST DeLuxe SEWING MACHINE.” Even the faceplate is beautifully engraved with an intricate floral design.

Machines such as this were produced during the mid-20th century, when numerous Japanese manufacturers were producing exceptionally sturdy mechanical sewing machines for export. Many were based on the proven Singer-style straight-stitch design and were sold under a remarkable variety of names and badges. JANOWM appears to be one of these much less commonly encountered trade or export names. Without a manufacturer’s plate or serial number, I would be cautious about assigning it to a specific factory or exact year.

This example has been electrified and includes its motor arrangement, wiring and foot controller. It sits in a very attractive wooden base with an integrated storage compartment and has its matching curved wooden carrying cover. The ruler markings incorporated into the wooden base are another lovely period detail.

The machine itself has survived with much of its elaborate original decoration still visible. There is age-related wear, scratching and some loss to the decals and finish, which can be clearly seen in the photographs. The wooden case also shows normal signs of age and use.

What makes this machine especially interesting is that it isn't another Singer, even though its construction reflects the influence Singer had on sewing-machine design throughout the world. These lesser-known Japanese and Asian export machines have developed their own following among collectors precisely because there were so many fascinating names, badges and decorative variations.

It would make a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage sewing machines, an impressive display piece for a sewing room or textile studio, or a great machine for someone who enjoys restoring and using these beautifully engineered old mechanical machines.

Details: JANOWM · “World’s Best DeLuxe” · Vintage mid-century mechanical sewing machine · Heavy cast-iron construction · Straight-stitch design · Black finish with elaborate cream-and-gold decoration · Engraved metal faceplate · Electric motor and foot controller · Wooden base with storage compartment · Matching curved wooden cover · Vintage condition with visible age-related wear.

An unusual survivor from the golden age of mechanical sewing machines—and certainly not a name you come across every day.
