Vintage Elna #1 “Grasshopper” Sewing Machine – c. 1950
Made in Geneva, Switzerland | Original Case, Manual & Accessories
This one is truly special.
The Elna Model #1, affectionately known as the “Grasshopper,” is one of the most distinctive and historically important sewing machines of the 20th century. Produced in Switzerland from 1940 to 1952, this particular machine dates to approximately 1950.
And one look at it explains where its wonderful nickname came from. Its unmistakable green finish, compact body and folding knee-operated motor control reminded people of a grasshopper—and the name has followed this little machine ever since.
Introduced in 1940, the Elna #1 represented a remarkably modern approach to home sewing. Developed with Swiss manufacturer Tavaro SA and engineer Ramon Casas Robert, it was conceived as a lighter, portable and more practical alternative to the large cabinet-mounted sewing machines that dominated homes at the time.
Its engineering was equally impressive. The Grasshopper features an all-metal drivetrain, rotary hook with horizontal drop-in bobbin, internal bobbin case and standard 15×1 needle system. Its combination of steel and molded aluminum construction helped make it considerably more portable without sacrificing the solid engineering for which Swiss-made Elna machines became known.
But perhaps one of the cleverest features is its original carrying case.
The case wasn't designed simply to protect the machine during transport. It ingeniously folds out to create an extended sewing surface, transforming the Grasshopper's free arm into a flat-bed sewing machine. For a machine designed more than 75 years ago, it is a wonderful example of thoughtful, innovative design.
This Grasshopper also comes with its original manual and tool box, making it an especially appealing find for an Elna enthusiast, vintage sewing-machine collector or anyone who appreciates exceptional mid-century industrial design.
There is something incredibly charming about this little green machine. At a time when most sewing machines were large, black and permanently housed in furniture, Elna created something colourful, compact and completely different.
More than 75 years later, the Elna Grasshopper still looks wonderfully unique—and remains a beautiful reminder of just how innovative sewing-machine design could be.
