Antique Wooden Millinery Hat Blocks
These beautiful antique wooden hat blocks are wonderful survivors from the traditional world of millinery and hat making, when hats were shaped individually by hand using specialized wooden forms.
Used by professional milliners, hat blocks provided the form over which dampened felt, straw and fabric could be stretched, shaped and allowed to dry. The material would often be pinned or tacked directly to the block while the milliner worked, which explains the wonderful little marks, scratches and imperfections still visible in the wood today. Rather than detracting from them, these marks are part of their history.
The larger example is particularly interesting. It is a multi-piece wooden crown block mounted on its original-style pedestal, allowing the milliner to work around the entire hat while it was being formed. The stamped numbers around the lower edge are typical of the size and identification markings found on working millinery blocks.
The smaller solid wooden form has a beautifully simple domed shape and a rich, naturally aged patina. Pieces such as this could have been used for shaping smaller hat crowns or other specialized millinery work.
Hat blocks were generally made from woods that could withstand repeated steaming, dampening, pinning and drying. Because these were working tools rather than decorative objects, surviving examples often have exactly the character we see here—pin marks, worn edges, discoloration and decades of use.
Today, antique millinery blocks have become highly collectible, particularly among people interested in fashion history, sewing, textiles and traditional craftsmanship. They also make extraordinary display pieces in a sewing room, fashion studio, boutique or home.
What I particularly love about these is that they haven't been refinished or made to look new. Their worn surfaces tell their story.
They are genuine pieces of the working history of fashion—tools once held in the hands of a milliner who used them to transform a simple piece of felt, straw or fabric into a beautifully shaped hat.
Wonderful pieces of fashion history and increasingly difficult to find.
