Antique New Williams Treadle Sewing Machine

Late 19th / Early 20th Century | Montreal, Canada

A wonderful piece of Canadian sewing history, this New Williams treadle sewing machine is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship and detail found in sewing machines from the turn of the 20th century.

Dating approximately from the 1890s to 1910s, the New Williams machines were manufactured or distributed in Montreal and were once an important part of everyday life in Canadian homes.

The sewing machine itself features the distinctive New Williams name, beautiful gold floral detailing and its original-style handwheel. It sits within an impressive wooden parlour-style cabinet featuring a drop-leaf work surface, multiple drawers and lovely carved and textured wood detailing.

Underneath is the substantial cast-iron treadle base, with the New Williams name incorporated directly into the decorative ironwork—a particularly attractive feature of this machine.

Also included is the wonderful wooden “coffin” cover, designed to sit over the sewing machine when not in use, protecting it from dust while allowing the cabinet to become a beautiful piece of furniture.

Today, a machine such as this is as much a piece of decorative history as it is a sewing machine. It would make a striking addition to a sewing room, textile studio, historic home, retail display or collection of vintage sewing memorabilia.

Features include: New Williams machine head with gold floral decals; wooden parlour-style cabinet with multiple drawers and drop-leaf work surface; decorative cast-iron treadle base bearing the New Williams name; and wooden protective “coffin” cover.  Original box of Feet included.

Approximate date: 1890s–1910s
